For landscape photographers and aurora chasers – the ultimate expedition of Earth and sky.
Randy Hanna is a leading polar landscape and wildlife photographer with more than 30 years’ experience running adventure photography tours. Known for his striking images and well-honed tuition style, Randy will help you capture aurora photographs that stay with you forever.
With Randy guiding the way, you’ll sail deep into a narrow fjord, where the ship gently settles into forming sea ice. This natural, frozen platform offers the perfect stability for long-exposure photography in total stillness. Once anchored, the deck transforms into your studio—quiet, steady, and ready for you to capture the aurora’s display.
Otherworldly landscapes and the heavens dancing above you.
East Greenland in autumn is a feast for the senses – on land, at sea, and in the sky. Nature photographer Randy Hanna is a veteran of polar photography and tuition, who will help you capture the aurora dancing above the fjords of East Greenland.
Photograph the mythical Scoresbysund, the largest fjord system in the world, its labyrinthine pathways strewn with cathedral-size icebergs. Encounter the local wildlife, including musk ox, Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, and maybe even (though they are rare here) polar bears and narwhals.
But keep your eyes on the skies and listen for the knock on your cabin door at night. The northern lights are the ultimate East Greenland sight at this time of year. Capturing them on camera is the goal of photographers great and small.
This voyage takes place during the latter half of September, at the optimum time for encountering the Scoresbysund northern lights. Whilst never guaranteed, there is a good chance to witness this magical phenomenon in one of the most scenic places on Earth, with zero light pollution and majestic mountains all around.
Prime Northern Lights season in Scoresbysund – Sail during one of the most reliable windows of the year to photograph the aurora dancing above Arctic fjords and icebergs.
Full-moon Arctic magic – With a full moon expected during this expedition, our guides will work directly with the captain so you’ll have the rare opportunity to capture glowing icebergs illuminated under the full moon - conditions photographers dream about.
Travel with the photography 'dream team' – Learn directly from polar photography legends in the field, with hands-on guidance during real shooting moments, not just classroom sessions. Randy’s unparalleled eye for wildlife and landscapes, paired with Virgil and Giancarlo’s photography expedition expertise, makes this the ultimate photography adventure.
A rare visit to Ittoqqortoormiit – step ashore in one of the most remote communities on Earth and document authentic Greenlandic life few travellers ever witness.
Photograph some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Arctic – towering peaks, colossal icebergs, and endless fjord systems that feel truly untouched and rarely visited by photographers.
Experience a naturally stable Arctic photography platform – as sea ice forms around the ship, you may anchor in frozen silence deep inside the fjords, creating a stable platform for long exposures of the Northern Lights and iceberg reflections.
"I seek out adventure travel providers that have a strong ethos in sustainability and conservation. After several years of searching among providers, I’m excited to partner with Secret Atlas."

Every expedition leaves a mark. Discover honest reflections, unforgettable moments, and personal highlights shared by guests who have explored the polar regions with us.
Randy is a renowned landscape and wildlife photographer, with his images gracing book covers, magazines, posters, and more. He's a storied professional and tutor, with an engaging teaching style built around one-on-one tuition.
We prefer to embrace spontaneity and make the most of every opportunity nature presents to us. This is how we believe a true, authentic expedition should run. After all, the thrill of adventuring into the unknown is more rewarding than a journey that runs on tracks!
So all our listed itineraries are for guidance only. The day-to-day activities may vary depending on the ice, the weather, and the wildlife. Landings are subject to site availability and permissions, and always in line with AECO regulations.
For even more flexibility, get in touch about making this a private yacht charter.
This is an exciting and convenient fly and cruise expedition, cutting down on time at sea with our own private charter flight from Iceland to Greenland.
The view from the plane over Greenland is immense. It’s a map of the adventure we’re about to embark on together – and the perfect way to start our expedition.
You'll be flying with our carrier, Icelandair, aboard a fixed-wing turboprop aircraft suitable for regional Arctic operations.
Your home-from-home in the Arctic.

We’re fuelled by the long-lost spirit of adventure, guided by environmental and cultural responsibility, and committed to creating transformative travel experiences.
We’re pioneers of the Expedition Micro Cruise, offering the smallest group sizes at both poles. That means a flexible itinerary. It means more time exploring and photographing. It means a deeper connection with your team and the natural world.
We understand that, out here, less is more. Less waiting to board Zodiacs, more time ashore. Less strict itineraries, more adventure. Less crowd, more immersion.

To capture the northern lights successfully, you’ll need specific camera gear suited to low-light conditions. Here's what we recommend:
Camera: Use a DSLR or mirrorless digital camera with strong high ISO performance (ISO 1600–6400 or higher). Full-frame sensors are ideal, but standard point-and-shoots or entry-level models generally don’t perform well in these conditions.
Lens: Choose a wide or ultra-wide-angle lens with a fast aperture — ideally f/2.8 or wider — to let in as much light as possible.
Tripod: A sturdy tripod is essential for long-exposure shots. Don’t forget to bring a good head and a quick-release plate to secure your camera properly.
Remote shutter release: A shutter cable or wireless remote helps you take sharp images without shaking the camera.
Spare batteries: Arctic temperatures drain batteries quickly, so carry spares with you and keep them warm in your pockets.
Headlamp with red light: This allows you to adjust your settings in the dark without spoiling your night vision or disturbing others’ shots.
Avoid UV filters: Leave UV filters off your lens, as they can create unwanted “bullseye” artefacts in aurora images.
To get the most from a Secret Atlas expedition, it’s important to be stable on your feet and able to undertake short hikes. But there’s no requirement to undertake any given activity, and we usually split into two groups: those who want to go to the top of the hill, and those who’d prefer a more leisurely stroll at the bottom (or a Zodiac cruise!).
The charter flight offers a more generous baggage allowance than most commercial airline flights to Greenland, with each guest able to bring 23kg check-in, 5kg hand luggage, and one small personal item.
All our East Greenland photo expeditions start with a charter flight from Keflavik International Airport, Iceland, to Nerlerit Inaat Airport (Constable Point Airport) in East Greenland, where you will board your Secret Atlas micro expedition vessel.
No, we welcome guests that share an interest not only in photography but in learning more about nature and observing wildlife in its natural habitat.
Our East Greenland photo tours are designed for guests that are looking to spend time out in the field taking photos. We welcome all levels of photographers. Whether you’re an experienced professional or completely new to photography, this is a great opportunity to spend time in nature capturing images.
In addition to our photography guide, we also have a highly experienced expedition leader and guide on board, giving you plenty of opportunity to learn about East Greenland.
