For landscape photographers and aurora chasers – the ultimate expedition of Earth and sky.

Virgil Reglioni is one of the world’s premier polar landscape and northern lights photographers. Known for his soulful images of the polar regions, Virgil is the ideal photo guide to have by your side as you chase the aurora borealis.

With Virgil leading the way, you’ll sail deep into a narrow fjord, where the ship gently settles into forming sea ice—creating a stable, natural platform for long-exposure photography. Once anchored, the deck becomes your open-air studio: perfectly still, framed by towering cliffs, and ready for the aurora to ignite the sky.

Otherworldly landscapes and the heavens dancing above you.

East Greenland in autumn is a feast for the senses – on land, at sea, and in the sky. Landscape photographer and northern lights expert Virgil Reglioni is the ideal photography guide to help you capture the Earth and heavens at their most profound.

Photograph the mythical Scoresbysund, the largest fjord system in the world, its labyrinthine pathways strewn with cathedral-size icebergs. Encounter the local wildlife, including musk ox, Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, and maybe even (though they are rare here) polar bears and narwhals.

But keep your eyes on the skies and listen for the knock on your cabin door at night. The northern lights are the ultimate East Greenland sight at this time of year. Capturing them on camera is the goal of photographers great and small.

This voyage takes place during the latter half of September, at the optimum time for encountering the Scoresbysund northern lights. Whilst never guaranteed, there is a good chance to witness this magical phenomenon in one of the most scenic places on Earth, with zero light pollution and majestic mountains all around.

Expedition highlights

  • The best time of year for photographing the northern lights

  • Numerous opportunities to capture East Greenland’s wild, perspective-altering landscapes from the ship and shore

  • Visit the remote settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit and learn about the unique Greenlandic way of life

  • We only work with award-winning legends of polar photography who are in-field tuition experts – you’re learning from the very best

  • Anchor in frozen silence, deep within East Greenland’s fjords, where forming sea ice locks your ship into place, creating a naturally stable platform for photographing the northern lights, dramatic peaks, and the surrounding Arctic landscapes.

Experiences

We don’t follow a fixed itinerary

We prefer to embrace spontaneity and make the most of every opportunity nature presents to us. This is how we believe a true, authentic expedition should run. After all, the thrill of adventuring into the unknown is more rewarding than a journey that runs on tracks!

So all our listed itineraries are for guidance only. The day-to-day activities may vary depending on the ice, the weather, and the wildlife. Landings are subject to site availability and permissions, and always in line with AECO regulations.

For even more flexibility, get in touch about making this a private yacht charter.

Why Secret Atlas?

Because we’re explorers, delivering expeditions for explorers like you.

We’re fuelled by the long-lost spirit of adventure, guided by environmental and cultural responsibility, and committed to creating transformative travel experiences.

We’re pioneers of the Expedition Micro Cruise, offering the smallest group sizes at both poles. That means a flexible itinerary. It means more time exploring and photographing. It means a deeper connection with your team and the natural world.

We understand that, out here, less is more. Less waiting to board Zodiacs, more time ashore. Less strict itineraries, more adventure. Less crowd, more immersion.

That’s why we’re not just small. We’re micro.

What's included?

  • Lectures, workshops on board, and daily exploratory activities

  • Free use of ship’s Wi-Fi powered by Starlink

  • Full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) beverages served during meals, while on board our micro cruises

  • One piece insulation suits available on board

  • IAATO and AECO fees, and operational fees and permits included

FAQs

What gear do I need to photograph the northern lights?

To capture the northern lights successfully, you’ll need specific camera gear suited to low-light conditions. Here's what we recommend:

  • Camera: Use a DSLR or mirrorless digital camera with strong high ISO performance (ISO 1600–6400 or higher). Full-frame sensors are ideal, but standard point-and-shoots or entry-level models generally don’t perform well in these conditions.

  • Lens: Choose a wide or ultra-wide-angle lens with a fast aperture — ideally f/2.8 or wider — to let in as much light as possible.

  • Tripod: A sturdy tripod is essential for long-exposure shots. Don’t forget to bring a good head and a quick-release plate to secure your camera properly.

  • Remote shutter release: A shutter cable or wireless remote helps you take sharp images without shaking the camera.

  • Spare batteries: Arctic temperatures drain batteries quickly, so carry spares with you and keep them warm in your pockets.

  • Headlamp with red light: This allows you to adjust your settings in the dark without spoiling your night vision or disturbing others’ shots.

Avoid UV filters: Leave UV filters off your lens, as they can create unwanted “bullseye” artefacts in aurora images.

How physically fit do I need to be?

To get the most from a Secret Atlas expedition, it’s important to be stable on your feet and able to undertake short hikes. But there’s no requirement to undertake any given activity, and we usually split into two groups: those who want to go to the top of the hill, and those who’d prefer a more leisurely stroll at the bottom (or a Zodiac cruise!).

How much luggage can I bring?

The charter flight offers a more generous baggage allowance than most commercial airline flights to Greenland, with each guest able to bring 23kg check-in, 5kg hand luggage, and one small personal item.

Where does this expedition depart from?

All our East Greenland photo expeditions start with a charter flight from Keflavik International Airport, Iceland, to Nerlerit Inaat Airport (Constable Point Airport) in East Greenland, where you will board your Secret Atlas micro expedition vessel.

Do I need to be an experienced photographer to join?

No, we welcome guests that share an interest not only in photography but in learning more about nature and observing wildlife in its natural habitat.

Our East Greenland photo tours are designed for guests that are looking to spend time out in the field taking photos. We welcome all levels of photographers. Whether you’re an experienced professional or completely new to photography, this is a great opportunity to spend time in nature capturing images.

In addition to our photography guide, we also have a highly experienced expedition leader and guide on board, giving you plenty of opportunity to learn about East Greenland.

Can I get one-on-one photography coaching?

Our photography guides are in-field tuition experts, experienced in group and one-on-one coaching. They’ll be on-hand throughout the expedition to offer in-field advice, scout photo opportunities, and deliver lectures and workshops.

Are there any photo or video restrictions in Greenland?

Guests are not permitted to use drones during the expedition. In any case a drone is being used during your expedition, it will be for professional use only by a member of the Secret Atlas team with the required permissions.

Limitations are in place to protect the wildlife we encounter. Often, it is not possible to get up-close to the wildlife we see. For more information, check out the ‘Visitor Guidelines’.
